Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune chronic inflammatory disorder, where in we primarily see joint inflammation, pain, loss of function and eventual joint destruction and deformity. The disease is of variable severity ranging from mild inflammation in a few joints to involvement of multiple joints, mainly involving hands and feet. As the disease progresses, the cartilage and the bone of the joint gets damaged. Cartilage destruction is the hallmark of this disease.
RA cannot be correlated with one single disease entity in Ayurveda. We use the management protocols of Amavata and Vatarakta in different stages of RA.
According to the Ayurvedic understanding of pathophysiology of disease, disequilibrium occurs at a higher level of physiology of the gastrointestinal tract to cause immune response and inflammation.
